This is not working for me also when 1 used cakephp v2.0.4 and try to add new user and mistakenly entered my password and click the submit button, the password field is suddenly filled with a strange long password.
bhndbrwneyes - If you are using CakePHP release 2.0, try dropping back to release 1.3. I'm just a beginner, but there appear to be significant differences in 2.0 that cause breakage to 1.3 code.
this is not working for me. Absolutely none of it
No login error message
No login redirect
No login...period
No error message when a "not allowed" page is viewed
Trying to display the error messages I get a message that says $session is not a valid variable
I've done this step by step as well as what people in the Q&A and cookbook said to do. Very frustrating.

Dang, cleared my day to do this tutorial, great tutorial but to hard for new person to follow, because you can barely read the text on the presenters screen so you cant really keep up well. If it came with source files this would be the best one out there for first timers.

so I changed the beforefilter of users controller to

}
I write the user vars etc in the beforefilter of app controller
additionally if the user is unable to resiger (a guest adding themselves as a user) I set the password fields to blank (user controller add if the save does not work)
if($this->validateErrors($this->User)) {
//die('we get here');
$this->data['User']['password'] = '';
$this->data['User']['password_confirmation'] = '';
}
the $this->Auth->authenicate = $this->User; prevents guests from being able to resgister since guests do not pass authenication
I think the vars to hold authenicated user should be added to Configure so that a guest or admin can add (regualr users can't sign up once logged in)
